Multi-part series includes Facebook Wars and Privacy Tips sections
New Media Edge published Jeff Cotrupe’s multi-part analysis of the Facebook privacy controversy, “The Problem Is a Lot Bigger Than Facebook.” One excerpt reads:
I think Facebook is the first or at least the most high-profile flash point where the notion that everything on the Internet is (or ought to be) free runs smack into the reality that, without being compensated for what they do, organizations have no reason to exist.
New Media Edge created a separate landing page, linked from the main entry, entitled Facebook Privacy. One section, The Commuter’s Guide to the Facebook Wars, offers a collection of the best Facebook discussions–pro, con and neutral–from around the blogosphere. The other, A Quick(er) Guide to Facebook Privacy, acknowledges that users cannot protect their private information from Facebook advertising partners but can take back the power, or part of it, by selectively sharing their content (or not) with other Facebook users. Cotrupe reviewed multiple Facebook on-site tutorials before creating a single step-by-step Privacy sequence designed to simplify and speed up the process.
Cotrupe’s approach was not to merely throw another brick in the wall of opinion but “to take apart the entire Facebook controversy and explore some of the best discussions that are already out there. I tried to build on that to arm people with information about how privacy works, or doesn’t, in a lot of places and what they can do to better protect their personal data.” New Media Edge decided it is going to leverage the links/tips landing page on an ongoing basis, adding links and other information over time.
